I thought it might be better to dedicate this app to this thread. The VPPlanetGenerator is located at https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=9E7DB242359A93F0&id=9E7DB242359A93F0!30215 I'm releasing 1.2.15074.2153 now. The craters should work a little better. One thing is different, I realized the Installer is such a bucket... it's awful. So there is no Installer. Instead, place it where you want to save it manually. Just make sure your system is set up with Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5.1. I'm working on POV-Ray part, which may take a while. Anyway, the plan is to render landscapes, height fields, clouds, stars, then gather those parts to render realistic looking planets. Here are some samples I made with POV-Ray... https://www.flickr.com/photos/eaglesun/4712876281/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/eaglesun/1515367944/ Please... comment, suggest, report bugs, etc... |

VPPlanetGenerator 20150214.1 is available from the site listed in the first post. I'm still working on another site, but it's not ready yet. This release includes contours for Mogensen Planet Generator. |

VPPlanetGenerator finally moved into a new home. Here it is. http://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/73-vpplanetgenerator/ Key words "planet generator" will take you to it too. And... Yes, it begins with https, even though it doesn't show. But it will click correctly. |

The error that made https display as http ha been fixed, so future posts will show this correctly, for example, https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/73-vpplanetgenerator/ |

I am trying to make a map using VPPlanet Generator, but when i use Mogensen Planet Generator, the results are a once colored texture. I am not doing something wrong, is the program itself faulty? |

Hi Gregory, can you describe more what you do and what you get? Here is the general usage: 1. Before rendering, the lower-left corner drop down lets you pick the colour map to use. (It's below the Map Projection.) 2. If you make your own with [Create/Edit Colour Map], you pick one you made, or you make a new one by picking "<New Colour Map>". 3. After adding/deleting and setting colors (colours), then [Save]. You save the map you loaded with new colors, or if "<New Colour Map>" you will write in a new name. 4. There may be a bug when you return to the "Planet Generator by Torben Mogensen" so you have to go back to the lower-left corner to drop-down the "Colour Map" and pick your map. Your own customized maps begin with "VP:". And I admit, I put higher priority on function than appearance. |

Hi Ron, Seems like I have the issue than Gregory. I just downloaded the last version of your tool from toolslib.net, installed it, opened it and launched a Morgensen Planet Generator. I touched no particular setting for 1st try. The rendered map picture is unicolor. The color changes if Colour Map is changed. I hope you can fix it ! Thanks ! Best regards Max |

Before touching "Colour Map", what is shown in the "Colour Map"? |
Thu Feb 26 06:43:21 2015 by Ron Vantreese |
If I can make the problem, I can fix it. The problem is... I can't make it :( I also installed it like a user, and rendered the Mogensen Planet Generator without changing anything. My "Colour Map" started on "Lefebvre2". Here's what I got: test20150225a.png at https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=9E7DB242359A93F0&id=9E7DB242359A93F0!30215 Check your local system: It may be "C:\Program Files (x86)\VPPlanetGenerator\MogensenPlanet" and tell me what you see there. You say a work-around is to change "Colour Map"? So, try each one in the list and tell me what works and what doesn't. Also do you have administrator rights? |

Hi Ron, Thanks for your quick answer. I'll post screenshots tonight to be more clear. I've been misleading you, changing map color is not a workaround, it generate an unicolor image in every case, but the color rendered varies with Colour Map setting (default I had a blue image, when using another parameter I had a grey one). I don't run the soft with admin permissions and would like to avoid doing it if possible, for security concerns. Thanks! |

Let's try 3 tests: Test 1: Run command-line equivalent. 1. Open DOS Window and go to "<Program Files>\VPPlanetGenerator\MogensenPlanet", where "<Program Files>" represents the location where your programs are installed... likely to be "C:\Program Files(x86)" or "C:\Program Files". 2. Decide on a destination where you will save an image... something like "<Target>" = "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" (I like Desktop because files I need to see will appear right in front of me.) 3. Enter this command: planet.exe -s 0.070046563057861 -w 799 -h 399 -m 1.000 -L 0.000000 -l 0.000000 -G 0 -g 0 -i -0.020000 -V 0.035000 -v 0.450000 -pq -C Lefebvre2.col -P > "<Target>\rendertest.ppm" NOTE: The "-P" causes a PPM image output 4. View the image. Test 2: Copy map files to your Documents Folder. 1. Copy map files from "<Program Files>\VPPlanetGenerator\MogensenPlanet" and paste them at "%USERPROFILE%\VP\PlanetGenerator". (Create VP\PlanetGenerator if it doesn't exist.) 2. Run VPPlanetGenerator and launch the Mogensen Planet Generator. 3. Drop-down the Colour Map and select "VP:<something>", such as "VP:Lefebvre2". Do other configurations (or perhaps don't change anything else except the seed). 4. Render it! Test 3: Render a smaller image. 1. Launch Mogensen Planet Generator and set up configurations. Keep the default Colour Map. 1a. Alternately, select a "VP:<map>" 2. Change this configuration before rendering: Set Width to 79 and Height to 39 to create a very small image. Let me know how the tests go. |

Hi Ron, The 1st test works ! Too bad it's the least handy ! :D Unfortunaly, the 2 other tests generate the same unicolor images. Do you have any clue ? Thanks ! |
Mon Mar 2 22:42:07 2015 by Ron Vantreese |
I'm suspecting the Unix text issue lines ending in "\n" vs DOS text issue lines ending in "\r\n" and the conflict of mixing them and getting .NET to handle them. I will see about handling the lines differently in the next release. |

A new VPPlanetGenerator is released at toolslib.net. It resolves the issue in some regions rendering unicolor maps and having trouble rendering clouds. |

New update is released at https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/73-vpplanetgenerator/ This one fixes the problem editing the Olsson color map, or other color maps of similar format. |
Tue Oct 13 04:58:09 2015 by Ron Vantreese |
Just released an update on toolslib.net. In Olsson Planet Generator: 1. New random engine with larger cycle and more pseudo random numbers. 2. Color Palettes 3. Map Projections In Mogensen Planet Generator: 4. A map editor for crude attempt finding seed to render the map. Map still has to be applied on command-line. 5. Undocumented bug fixes. |

I apologize for the delay in seeing this.... and can you explain more what you are doing, as in a list of steps? Are you using the GUI program or the planet.exe program? |
