Heightfield -H file format

I'm trying to use the -H option for the heightfield and the manual says the default format is .BMP. However, attempting to open the file results in an error as it says it's not a valid format. Opening up the file in Notepad shows a list of six digit numbers in plaintext. Is this a bug or is the heightfield extension supposed to be something else?

Ok. Further research says the default format for -H is *.heightfield. The problem is, nothing I can find can make use of this file as-is nor can I find anything to convert it to a usable file such as *.mdr & *.bin.

The format produced by the -H format is simply one integer printed as text for each pixel, as described in the manual.  It is not intended as input to any specific program, but as a format that will be fairly easy to convert to other formats, such as the Rayshade height field format (http://graphics.stanford.edu/~cek/rayshade/doc/guide/chapter2_13.html). I haven't made any such conversion programs, though -- I used the format in a rather primitive raytracer I wrote myself ages ago.
