I have added a biome legend to the webpage, so you don't have to look in the manual.  I have also removed the old generator option from the online generator -- you can still download the old generator as a command-line program.  I don't believe very many people use the old generator anyway.

Hello, I think I used the online generator, since now I am using a seed that I had kept for years now, but now the online generator spits out a different (yet similar) world.

At least in 2020, it worked like always.

is this the link for the old generator?

And also, there is no version for Mac, right?

I don't know how long ago you used the seed, but if very long ago, you might have used the generator before a major change was made which made maps different.  There is a "Use old generator" checkbox for the online generator, which may help.

But since your map is similar to the old, it is more likely that you changed some of the other parameters (sea level and such) and didn't do so for the new map.  If you have an unmodified .bmp file of the old map, a text line is appended to the bitmap file which details all parameters.  You can get this line by using the "tail -n 1 <filename>" command on OSX.

I forgot that the "use old generator" checkbox has been removed in the latest version of the online generator, since biomes do not work with the old generator.  You can still download the old version (offline only) for use on your own computer.

The change was made in 2016, so I felt that most people would no longer use the old generator (and those that do can still use the offline version).  Is your map older than this?

Torben: I'm now curious to understand what was the "old" generator? What is the "new" generator? Are they two different versions of planet.exe?

Alvin: 73-vpplanetgenerator was my project that used Torben's and others' world generators. I'm working on a new version though.

They are, indeed, two different versions.  They do not generate the same maps from the same seeds, so I kept the old around for those who want to reuse old seeds. A lot of features has been added to the new version, so I thought it best to remove the old from the online program (as a lot of the selections are not valid for the old).  The old version is still available as source code from the web page.
